MAN Rollo has reached the next major milestone in the Parsifal project. Parsifal involves the construction of 40 LNG-powered inland tankers by shipyard Concordia Damen. MAN Rollo supplies EU Stage V certified generator sets for the 40 tankers. A few months ago, the first sets passed the Factory Acceptance Test without any problems. Now they are installed in the Blue Marjan, the first Parsifal tanker, where they undergo the Harbor Acceptance Test.
First ship in the line
These stringent tests are still in full swing, but Peter Nieuwveld, Project Manager at MAN Rollo, is confident. He explains: “Recently, Concordia Damen have installed the three EU Stage V generator sets in the Blue Marjan. MAN Rollo then carried out an installation inspection and checked all systems. Everything looked good and gave us confidence for the follow-up tests. Now we will start up the motors and load test them according to our own protocols. We test static load points, dynamic load points and the various alarms. This will take about ten days. If everything is within specification and OK, a loaded sea trial will follow. This Sea Acceptance Test generally takes one or two days. All test results are ultimately sent to Lloyds and to the customer. Sometimes they will pinpoint a few issues that we solve and then the three generator sets are officially certified. Naturally, we are very proud of that.”
Fully certified EU Stage V solution
Over the next three years, MAN Rollo will supply a total of 80 LNG sets (495 ekW) and 40 diesel sets (277 ekW) for the 40 chemical tankers in the Parsifal line. The LNG generator sets deliver propulsion and on-board power, the diesel sets serve as back-up. With the recent certification, MAN Rollo is now one of the first engine builders in the marine industry to supply a fully certified MAN EU Stage V solution.
