The Christmas Edition of ‘De Binnenvaartkrant’ was published on 18 December,
it contained a nice article about MAN Rollo!
By Johan de Witte
‘Stage V’ for new engines below 300 kW will apply as of January 2019, it will also apply for engines over 300 kW starting in January 2020. ‘Stage V’ is not yet required for engines that are in operation, have been ordered or bought before the specified end date. CCNR II engines up to 300 kW must be installed by 1 July 2020, more powerful engines by July 2021. This means that 2020 will be a good year to future-proof the type of propulsion in combination with the environment and the budget.
The MAN Rollo engine is sustainable and has low emissions! It is based on 100 years of knowledge, quality and reliability! It is a common-rail engine with electronic fuel injection for good fuel efficiency. Compact and light, it costs little to maintain, is efficient, very quiet, and, last but not least, it is attractively priced! And if something unfortunately goes wrong, the mechanics are professionals, trained on the MAN production floor in Nuremberg. In addition to complete new engines, MAN Rollo in Zoetermeer also stocks all of their parts. MAN Rollo’s international service network consists of local partners.
De Groot Diesel Marine Services BV in Dordrecht is such a partner. Sales Manager Bert Ridders, from De Groot, and Account Manager Marine Patrick Franke, from MAN Rollo, emphasise this during an interview. “It is normal for De Groot to install a new or refurbished engine. We have been in business for thirty years and have seen many ships sail out of the Merwede harbour after being fitted with one of them. We also recognise the need to offer European-wide service.
With respect to the MAN engines, we recently installed a D2862 LE444 kW 735 (1000 hp) type engine in the MVS Tycho. In the last few months, five engines of this type have been sold to various owners. The MAN Rollo engines range in power from 270 kW to 735 kW.”
Why a MAN engine, Patrick Franke?
”It is an economic and smart way to address the coming emission requirements. De Groot offers service, we at MAN Rollo offer support. MAN is a strong brand and has the perfect engine for the inland shipping sector that offers maximum torque in a wide rev range and a 600-hour maintenance interval. It is cheap to maintain and very reliable!”
We learn from a telephone call with Marinus de Heer at the helm of the 1293-ton MVS Tycho that the ship is very fast when the 1000 hp of the MAN engine is used, although a little less power improves fuel consumption.
Have you ever sailed with a MAN engine before?
“No, I haven’t.
However, the brand has been around longer than I have, and has a sound reputation. I analysed the fuel consumption in kg/hours, considered the relatively inexpensive Hengst and Parker Racor filters, the installation dimensions, weight, purchase and installation costs, and its performance. And everything looked good. I considered everything and came to the conclusion that MAN Rollo offers a service that goes beyond just the delivery of the engine.
The engine is manufactured in Nuremberg and if needed, spare parts are available from Zoetermeer. With De Groot Diesel Marine Services in Dordrecht as the MAN Rollo installer and service provider, you really have everything at hand.”
