MAN Rollo and Concordia Damen have signed the largest order in MAN Rollo’s history. Shipbuilder Concordia Damen will construct 40 new Parsifal type inland ships over the next four years. These sustainable tankers will be propelled by MAN Rollo generator sets that deliver 495 ekW each using liquid natural gas (LNG). A MAN Rollo diesel generator set will provide each vessel with an additional 277 ekW of backup power. Of particular note, every engine is Stage V certified, making the environment the biggest winner of this deal.
Karel Schuurman, Account manager Marine at MAN Rollo, is delighted with the order: “MAN Rollo prioritizes sustainable innovation and leads the industry in the development of LNG generator sets for the maritime market. These Stage V certified LNG generator sets are a natural continuation of our previous work. It’s a tough challenge to meet Stage V standards with engines over 300 kW.”
First delivery in late 2021
This order is for the delivery of 80 MAN Rollo LNG generator sets with 495 ekW output each, and 40 MAN Rollo diesel generator sets with 277 ekW output. Work on the first ship will commence next month with delivery of the first ship scheduled for late 2021. Subsequent ships will be delivered every month thereafter. The vessels will be chartered by Shell to transport mineral oil between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and the Rhine network.
Positive development
40 new ships also entails a large boost for LNG as a fuel in inland shipping. As Schuurman explains: “The use of LNG has already been increasing several maritime markets, now including inland shipping. The magnitude of this order will significantly increase the percentage of LNG in this sector, which is a positive development. So I am pleased that we were able to achieve Stage V compliance. Incidentally, these engines have already proven their qualities as IMO Tier III certified engines in other maritime markets.
In addition to this Stage V development using LNG, we also offer advanced diesel-based engines over 300kW with Stage V certification. So the future looks bright. For us, for our customers, and for the environment.”
