MAN Rollo has supplied three LNG generator sets for the crane vessel Werkendam. Neptune Shipyards built the ship on behalf of international dredging and offshore contractor Van Oord.
The MAN Rollo LNG generator sets generate a joint output of 1,428 kWe and, together with the UltraCaps, provide the hybrid drive of the Werkendam during both navigation and crane operation. A 38 m3 LNG storage tank is installed on the rear deck. This is sufficient to navigate and operate without bunkering for two weeks.
Over the past few weeks, MAN Rollo service engineers have carried out installation checks to ensure that the installation has been carried out following MAN guideline and regulations. Such an installation inspection includes a check on how the HT/LT cooling system is laid out and the components included in it. The connections for starting air and control air, the exhaust system and its routing have also been examined, as has the electrical interfacing of the LNG generator sets with the ship’s AMS (Alarm Monitoring System) and PMS (Power Management System).
At the beginning of May, the LNG generator sets were started up onboard for the first time, after which the performance testing took place in the presence of Neptune Shipyard, Van Oord, Van der Leun and Bureau Veritas. Following the successful completion of the testing, the parallel operation and load sharing were calibrated and audited by Bureau Veritas.
Next up: the sea trials. One trial with the Werkendam on her own and one with a barge alongside. The speed trial, crash stop and manoeuvring trials all went smoothly. The testing of the DP (Dynamic Positioning) system had already been completed at an earlier date.
With the completion of the commissioning, MAN Rollo is very proud of the result and the performance of the LNG generators sets. Even though the sets were originally sold with load steps of max 40 kWe/s, the LNG generator sets on board the Werkendam showed during performance testing that they could handle load steps of up to 100 kWe/s. With this project, MAN Rollo has proven that it can deliver a highly efficient, environmentally friendly and clean solution with a perfect load response for applications like this. By opting for MAN Rollo’s LNG generator sets the reduction achieved is 83.5 % on NOx and 98.5 % on particulate matter (PM).
